Elon Musk reveals retirement of SpaceX Dragon spacecraft during conflict with Trump

Elon Musk Responds to Trump’s Comments on SpaceX

Elon Musk recently stated that SpaceX is set to retire its Dragon spacecraft in light of potential changes to government contracts under President Donald Trump’s administration.

On Thursday, Trump took to Truth Social, saying, “The easiest way to save money on budgets, billions, billions of dollars is to end Elon’s government subsidies and contracts. I’ve always been surprised that Biden didn’t do that!”

In reaction to Trump’s remarks, Musk indicated that SpaceX would soon begin phasing out the Dragon spacecraft. He tweeted, “In light of the President’s statement regarding the cancellation of my government contract, SpaceX will soon begin to abolish the Dragon Spaceships.”

SpaceX has a substantial contract with NASA that involves transporting astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) to ensure ongoing efforts there until the program is scheduled to conclude in 2030.

Recently, NASA astronauts Sniwilliams and Butchwillmore returned safely from the ISS, having spent nine months in orbit, with assistance from SpaceX. Musk had initially offered support for their return during the Biden administration.

The Dragon spacecraft has played a crucial role in reviving spaceflight since 2020, ferrying NASA astronauts to and from the ISS.

Musk highlighted the unique capabilities of the Dragon, noting that it is currently the only spacecraft able to transport a significant amount of cargo back to Earth and the first civilian spacecraft to send humans to the ISS.

In a related note, during a meeting with German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz, Trump discussed the tense relationship with Musk, suggesting that Musk’s dissatisfaction stemmed from the recent spending bill. House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed disappointment regarding Musk’s critical comments about Trump’s initiative, labeling them as “very unfortunate.”

Musk’s ongoing critiques of the “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which aligns with many of Trump’s legislative goals, indicate a complex and somewhat contradictory viewpoint regarding governmental spending and support.
