Elon Musk Defends Starlink Amid Ukraine Connectivity Issues
On Saturday, Elon Musk continued to advocate for Starlink as Ukraine dealt with over a week of connectivity restrictions impacting its military efforts against Russia. Musk claimed that SpaceX has significantly assisted Ukraine more than any other private entity, while also accusing the country of misusing the technology in ways that violate its service terms.
“Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be,” Musk shared on X, alleging that Ukraine had misused Starlink, which led to the tightening of service last week.
He further clarified that the Starshield, another system, operates under U.S. government control. “What they decide to do is up to them,” he remarked.
Musk emphasized the importance of Starlink for Ukraine’s defense, stating it’s currently the only communication system resistant to being jammed or destroyed. He claimed that if Starlink were turned off, it would lead to an immediate collapse of the Ukrainian front line, noting that this is a statement of fact, not a threat.
He also expressed intense disdain for those he deemed ‘virtue-signaling warmongers’ who advocate for prolonged conflict without offering reasonable solutions. “May you burn in hell. End of story,” he stated.
Last week, Musk attributed the recent issues to the U.S. military. He pointed out that any limitations on Starlink’s speed or usage resulted from decisions made by the military and ultimately the President.
Meanwhile, a source close to the situation reported that Ukraine was not notified in advance of the connectivity changes, which surprised many within the forces relying on the service, contracted through the U.S. until May 2027.
Ukrainian forces noticed the limitations following connectivity issues and were informed by SpaceX that the Starshield service would be limited for platforms exceeding 100 mph.
Musk did not disclose whether the new restrictions had specific authorization from President Trump, War Secretary Pete Hegseth, or any other officials.
Ukraine’s defense ministry announced on Saturday that they had regained more extensive access to Starlink, with stable connections at speeds reaching 250 mph.
The reasons behind the earlier speed restrictions remain unclear, as accusations have been directed at both Trump and Musk. This development coincides with renewed diplomatic efforts between Ukraine and Russia to potentially resolve the ongoing conflict.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Hegseth denied any claims that the U.S. government played a role in the slowdowns.
Russia recently agreed to reconvene negotiations with Washington and Kyiv in the following month, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed openness to ceasefire discussions during a recent interview.
