Elon Musk’s company Neuralink announced Thursday that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct its first human clinical study.

“We are pleased to share that we have received FDA approval to initiate a first-in-human clinical study,” the company said in a tweet.

Musk helped co-found Neuralink, a company working to develop brain implants that could one day help paralyzed people walk again, as well as help with other neurological problems.

Since 2019, Musk has predicted that Neuralink will receive FDA approval for human trials.

However, Neuralink’s application was rejected in early 2022, and since then the company has addressed concerns expressed by the FDA about the implant’s safety.

Elon Musk Says Neuralink Microchips Allow Monkey Brains to ‘Control’ Computers

The company has not yet started recruiting for the clinical trial, but added that information regarding recruitment will be announced soon.

Musk launched Neuralink in 2016 with the goal of developing chips that would allow the brain to control complex electronics and eventually restore motor function to people with paralysis.

If successful, the technology will combine artificial intelligence with human capabilities through the use of brain chips. Musk said he hopes this will help treat brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, dementia and Alzheimer’s.
