Elon Musk's latest major project is set to change Texas.

Elon Musk’s Ambitious Project in Grimes County, Texas

Grimes County, Texas, is set to be the focal point for Elon Musk’s most ambitious venture yet.

It’s another blow to California, which might have hosted this significant project.

Unsurprisingly, it’s a hefty investment. Musk’s company will kick things off with an initial $16.8 billion investment, aiming for a total of $55 billion, which could eventually balloon to nearly $120 billion as further phases roll out, according to reports.

The plan is to develop a comprehensive facility that can cater to the needs of SpaceX, Tesla, and the U.S. government—all in one place.

But there’s more.

“There are thousands of good-paying jobs in the isolated province,” according to some reports.

The facility, dubbed TerraFab, was announced shortly after President Trump signed an executive order focused on quantum computing and boosted production.

Michael Crasios from the White House Office of Science and Technology stated there’s an urgent need to enhance domestic supply chains for items like superconducting circuits and semiconductors.

Musk is moving to answer the previous administration’s call to ramp up chip production at the massive Terrafab, which will cover about one-sixth the size of Manhattan—significantly larger than Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas. This Gigafactory was also part of Musk’s efforts to escape California’s challenging corporate landscape.

For some perspective, the new complex is expected to be equivalent in size to around 60 NFL stadiums.

The facility will be tasked with manufacturing, packaging, and testing advanced memory chips that will support not only SpaceX’s data centers but also Tesla’s Optimus robots and futuristic CyberCabs.

Musk is quite clear about the facility’s role in the chip production sphere.

With approximately 100 million square feet available, the facility will create around 3,000 jobs and potentially include several power plants. Musk emphasized that TerraFab would bring cutting-edge manufacturing to the U.S., generating thousands of high-wage positions in Texas, while enabling large-scale AI chip production for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications.

Interestingly, Musk is leaning toward using gas power plants instead of solar energy for this initiative.

This might raise eyebrows, considering Musk’s history of significant investments in solar power dating back to 2016 when he acquired SolarCity for $2.6 billion.

Reports suggest that SpaceX’s data center team plans to provide its own energy to the Texas facility and is also looking to install a “very large battery array.”

Moreover, Musk faces stiff competition from major semiconductor giants, like TSMC, which is rapidly expanding its operations in Arizona.

TerraFab will adopt free electron laser technology, allowing for the generation of powerful, tunable light essential for producing efficient, advanced chips. This could significantly speed up the manufacturing process.

In response to talks about the project, Musk commented, “We either build a Terrafab, or we don’t have the chips. But we need the chips, so we build a Terrafab.”
