xAI aims to build the world’s largest supercomputer, and the Elon Musk-founded artificial intelligence company recently announced that it chose Memphis as its home base.
The Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce announced Wednesday that the southwest Tennessee city had won the proposed project, which it said would be “the largest capital investment by a start-up in the history of Memphis.” The supercomputer will be called the “Gigafactory of Computing,” according to the chamber.
Musk responded to X’s post, which included footage of a Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce press conference announcing plans to bring a supercomputer to Memphis, saying this was “true.”

The Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce said the Memphis and Shelby County Economic Development Growth Engine, the Tennessee River Basin Development Authority and others must still give their approval to the project.

The AI company “expects to create high-quality jobs upon completion of the first phase and create opportunities for further significant investment in future phases,” the nonprofit said.

We had an ideal location for our investment. And we had our people who created new and innovative processes to keep up with the pace needed to make this transformative project a success.”

xAI has been officially up and running since July 2023, when it was announced by the tech billionaire who also serves as president of Tesla and SpaceX. The company, which developed “Grok,” an AI chatbot for social media platform X, aims to “understand the true nature of the universe.”

Late last month, xAI announced a $60 million Series B round of funding and said it had “multiple exciting technology updates and product” announcements planned.
