Elon Musk's X has significantly increased the price of its top-tier user subscriptions in multiple regions to help pay the platform's creators and provide an ad-free browsing experience.
The Verge report In a move aimed at better paying creators and improving the user experience, X/Twitter has significantly increased the price of its Premium Plus subscription in several regions. The price increase, which went into effect during the week of Christmas, increased monthly subscription fees in the U.S. from $16 to $22 and annual subscription fees from $168 to $229, an increase of nearly 40%.
The impact of price hikes is not limited to the US, with monthly subscription fees also rising from 16 euros to 21 euros in many European countries, including France, Germany and Spain. Subscribers in Canada, Australia and the UK will also face price increases, with monthly fees rising to $26, $35 and £17 respectively. New subscribers will receive the increased price immediately, while existing users will remain at their current rate until January 20, 2025. The basic subscription tier of X is not affected by these changes.
X justified the price increase by highlighting several key improvements to the Premium Plus subscription. The company highlighted that its top-tier subscription is now completely ad-free, describing the feature as a “significant enhancement” to the current user experience. This move is in line with the growing trend of platforms offering ad-free options to provide users with a more seamless and uninterrupted browsing experience.
In addition to the ad-free feature, Company X also cited recent changes to its revenue sharing program in October 2024 as factors for the price increase. The company said subscriptions “now more directly drive” payments to creators, with a focus on rewarding content quality and engagement, rather than relying solely on ad views. Ta. Premium Plus subscribers also benefit from a variety of additional features and benefits.
