Elon Musk’s X to hire 100 content moderators in Austin this year

Elon Musk’s X is in the process of hiring 100 content moderators at its new office in Austin, Texas, and will focus on combating online child abuse on social media platforms, executives said Saturday.

X, formerly known as Twitter, announced a new “Center of Excellence for Trust and Safety” in a blog post from CEO Linda Yaccarino on Friday. This new initiative comes as part of the company’s efforts to combat child sexual exploitation (CSE) on social media platforms.

“While X is not the platform of choice for children and minors, users between the ages of 13 and 17 make up less than 1% of daily users in the United States. “We’ve made it more difficult for users to share and engage with CSE content while making it easier for users to report CSE content,” Yaccarino wrote.

She added that the platform is “improving its detection mechanisms to find more reportable content on the platform for reporting to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).”

The post notes that X suspended 12.4 million accounts in 2023 for violating the platform’s CSE policies, a dramatic increase from 2.3 million account suspensions in 2022.

The company also queried 850,000 reports to NCMEC in 2023, including through X’s first-ever fully automated report.

The company said the amount is more than eight times the amount Twitter cited NCMEC in 2022, before it was acquired by an ownership group led by Elon Musk.

Musk has faced criticism for changes to the social media site’s content moderation policies after acquiring Twitter in 2022, which has caused some advertisers to reconsider spending on the platform. .
