Elton John, 77, shares that his two sons are concerned about his ‘mortality’

Elton John's new documentary sheds light on his relationship with his two sons.

In the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, the singer talks about the fears his two sons, 13-year-old Zachary and 11-year-old Elijah, have about his “death.”

“They're thinking about my death. They're worried about my death,” he said in the documentary. “It's not about David, it's about me,” he added, referring to David Furnish, her husband and another father to her sons.

The 77-year-old singer said he and his two sons have a strong bond and that they “love their dad” and just want him “to be there for them forever.”

John's children aren't the only ones worried about him being there for milestone moments in their lives. They say they wish he'd be there forever, but they know that won't be the case.

“I want to see them have kids and get married, but I don't think I'll be there to see that happen. Who knows. So I want to make the most of the time I have while I'm alive – the best of my time,” he added. “Our time together is so wonderful and so precious.”

The “I'm Still Standing” singer recently suffered an eye infection that left him with “limited” vision in one eye, so his passing may be more front of mind than ever.

“They're thinking about my death. They're worried about my death.”

“Over the summer I was plagued by a severe eye infection which unfortunately limited my vision in one eye. I am getting better but it is a very slow process and it will be some time before I regain vision in the affected eye,” he said. “I am spending the summer recuperating quietly at home and feel positive about my healing and progress in recovery so far.”

The documentary follows John as he prepares for his final North American concerts during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in November 2022, looking back on his decades-spanning career and all the ups and downs he's experienced along the way.

After the documentary's premiere, John and Furnish participated in a Q&A, where John explained that the point of the film was that “the truth should always be told.” He detailed how hard it was to hide who he was, and how telling the truth has made his life better.

“The years I lost by not telling the truth and by fooling myself were very sad and very foolish,” he said during the Q&A. “Once I stopped fooling myself, obviously my life got better.”
