Embassy in Kyiv issues alert about possible major air attack

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has issued a security alert predicting a “potentially significant air raid” could happen in the city within the next 24 hours. The embassy noted receiving credible information about an imminent attack, urging American citizens in Ukraine to be ready for immediate evacuation if an alert is triggered.

They advised individuals to identify evacuation routes beforehand, stockpile essential supplies like food and water, and adhere to guidance from local authorities. Additionally, downloading air raid warning apps has been recommended.

As reports emerged, Kyiv experienced extensive missile and drone strikes early Sunday, causing injuries and damage to residential buildings, as noted by the city’s mayor. This came in the wake of warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who indicated that Russia might be planning to deploy hypersonic missiles, based on intelligence from various sources.

In a message shared via social media, President Zelenskyy highlighted the possibility of a coordinated attack on Ukraine, asserting that various weapon types could be involved. He emphasized the importance of responding promptly to air raid sirens to safeguard lives, describing the situation as increasingly dire.

He remarked on the implications of using such advanced weaponry, suggesting it would serve as a dangerous example for future aggressors. Zelenskyy expressed the necessity for a proactive global response to pressure Moscow, asserting that Ukraine was preparing its defenses and would respond decisively to any Russian aggression.

He referred to an ongoing three-day ceasefire, previously discussed with former President Donald Trump, indicating this moment could provide an opportunity for peace. However, he reiterated that Russia cannot be allowed to wreak havoc unchecked.

Earlier in the month, during the tentative ceasefire, President Putin had seemingly expressed hope for an end to the conflict. Nonetheless, following a Ukrainian drone strike that caused devastation in Starobilsk, he vowed retaliation, labeling the incident an act of terrorism. Ukraine, however, denied targeting civilians, insisting the focus was on a military command unit.
