Emil Forsberg’s Future with Red Bull New York in Question
Star player Emil Forsberg is reportedly set to leave Red Bull New York after the 2027 MLS Sprint Season and return to Sweden, as indicated by a recent report.
The 35-year-old Forsberg extended his contract through the upcoming sprint season next spring, as noted by a Swedish outlet. His original contract was due to expire at the end of the 2026 season.
A spokesperson for the Red Bulls declined to comment on the report when approached by The Post.
Speculations about Forsberg’s future began to emerge over the summer, particularly after he made the decision to retire from international soccer earlier this year.
In August, Julian de Guzman, the head of sport for the Red Bulls, mentioned that there hadn’t been any significant discussions regarding Forsberg’s future with the club.
In a separate conversation with The Post, Forsberg himself stated that he wasn’t actively thinking about what lay ahead. “That’s really up to my agent and the folks at Red Bull,” he said. “I think they’ll figure out what’s best for me. I’m not stressed about it. My focus is just on improving and helping the team.”
Since joining the club, Forsberg has taken on the role of captain and has scored 27 goals along with 18 assists across all competitions with Red Bull New York.
So far this season, he has recorded four goals and eight assists.
Forsberg played a crucial role in the team’s journey to the MLS Cup Final in 2024, where they ultimately lost to the LA Galaxy.
Currently, the Red Bulls are fighting to maintain their playoff position with only two games remaining in the regular season after suffering a 3-2 loss to the New England Revolution on Wednesday night.
