Heinemann Discusses Excitement Following Trade to Islanders
Matthew Dersch made it clear how keen he was on acquiring Emil Heinemann when the Swede was included in the trade that sent Noah Dobson to Montreal.
Heinemann expressed his excitement on Long Island during his first media appearance since the June trade. He recalled how, after hearing rumors about his name being in play, he found himself looking up information about New York while attending a football game later that evening.
The anticipation was thrilling, so when the trade was finalized, he felt ready for the new chapter. “When they called, I was like, ‘It’s fine, I’m going here,’” Heinemann shared. “I saw it on Twitter too, so I knew it was coming. When it happened, I was really excited. It’s a new adventure for me and my girlfriend, too. We’re looking forward to it.”
This time around, Heinemann feels he has a clear role with the Islanders, a departure from last year when he was vying for a position with the Canadiens during training camp.
His competitive nature resonates well with Darche, and his physical style of play seemingly suits the Islanders’ fourth line. “After a while, you’ll feel warmer and more comfortable with the league,” Heinemann reflected. “It was a tough break getting injured in the middle of the season. Overall, I’m proud of last year; I learned how to navigate playing in the NHL and what it takes to stay in the league.”
This year, he’s eager to take the next step.
Heinemann, who tallied 10 points with eight assists in 62 games against the Canadiens last season, is the only player from the Dobson trade expected to return to New York soon. Kashaun Echson and Victor Ecklund, who were the 16th and 17th overall picks from that deal, will be playing for Jugardens in the Swedish Hockey League, while Hitchson will join the OHL’s Barry Colts.
Ichison is currently at Long Island rookie camp but missed practice on Saturday due to what the Islanders referred to as maintenance.
Amid contract discussions focused on two prospects, Dersch remarked that the Islanders made a strong case for including Heinemann in the trade. “I think it’s potential,” Dersch stated on draft night. “He’s a strong kid who skates great, and he has a rocket of a shot. Looking at his goal, it’s a fast shot that can score. This player has a lot of possibilities.”
