Emily’s List has endorsed Illinois Governor Juliana Stratton (D), making her, alongside former Democratic chair Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill), a prominent figure in their support for pro-choice women in politics.
In their statement, Emily’s List praised Stratton as a “bold leader” who has faced challenges and aimed to improve life for residents of Illinois. They expressed confidence in her potential to be a strong advocate against what they see as the recklessness of the Republican Party in Washington.
A senior strategist within the Black Democratic community highlighted that the PAC’s backing stems from Stratton’s proven track record while serving in the Illinois House of Representatives and her historic role as the first Black woman to be elected lieutenant governor.
If either Stratton or Kelly wins, it would be reminiscent of the legacy of former Senator Carol Moseley Braun (D-Ill.), the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Notably, three Black women will be serving together in the Senate if they succeed, alongside Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.).
However, Stratton faces significant competition; fellow candidate Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) has already spent over $7 million on his campaign efforts.
Recent polls from the Governors Association indicate a competitive primary, with Krishnamoorthi leading Stratton by 17 percentage points. A September poll showed support shifting, with 33% favoring Krishnamoorthi, 18% for Stratton, and 8% for Kelly.
Stratton’s support comes from notable figures including Governor JB Pritzker (D-Ill.) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.). Duckworth highlighted Stratton’s extensive public service, her dedication as a mother to four daughters, and her role as a caregiver for her own mother, emphasizing her advocacy for working families.
This Senate seat is open after Senator Dick Durbin steps down, marking a significant opportunity in a traditionally Democratic stronghold.
