Holidays Redefining for the Willis Family Amid Bruce’s Health Struggles

The holidays are shaping up differently for the blended Willis family as Bruce battles frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA).

Emma Hemming, Bruce’s wife, noted that, “We have to learn, adapt, and make new memories.” While she emphasized the importance of retaining familiar traditions, she acknowledged that life continues. Speaking at the End Well 2025 conference in Los Angeles, she stressed the challenges of dealing with dementia but also highlighted that, “there is still joy in it.”

She expressed the need to avoid casting dementia in a purely negative light, sharing that laughter and joy persist, even if things look different now. Emma did not disclose specific plans for Thanksgiving but hinted at festive celebrations for Christmas. “Bruce loved Christmas. We love celebrating Christmas with him,” she remarked, alluding to his iconic movie by saying, “I think it’s important to play ‘Die Hard’ because it’s a Christmas movie.”

Emma reflects on their daily life as “very simple,” emphasizing the family’s focus on just being present with Bruce. Her stepdaughter, Rumer Willis, echoed this sentiment in a heartfelt video, stating that she feels “so happy and grateful” to still be able to hug Bruce, regardless of whether he recognizes her. Even in his altered state, Rumer senses “that spark in him,” which brings her comfort, especially as she brings her own daughter, Louetta, to visit her grandfather.

Bruce shares children with both Emma and his first wife, Demi Moore, including Rumer, Scout (34), and Talulah Willis (31). The family announced in March 2022 that Bruce had been diagnosed with aphasia, leading him to retire from acting. His FTD diagnosis was revealed the following February.

In August, Emma shared her difficult choice to move Bruce to a nearby home that caters to the 24-hour care his condition requires, emphasizing the importance of a calm and safe environment for him.
