Emma Heming Willis Discusses Bruce Willis’ Diagnosis

Emma Heming Willis has recently shared insights regarding her husband Bruce Willis’ diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In a podcast episode titled “Conversation with Cam,” the 47-year-old revealed how the condition impacts his ability to understand that he’s ill.

She explained, “I think he perceives this as his normal, which may not be true for everyone.” She highlighted a neurological aspect known as anosognosia, a condition that prevents individuals from recognizing their own illnesses. “When people assume it’s denial, it’s more complicated. It’s the brain’s response to change, which is part of the disease,” she noted.

Emma also expressed a mix of emotions: “It feels like a blessing and a curse. I’m thankful he doesn’t fully grasp his condition; it kept me from connecting dots I might have otherwise.”

She described Bruce as still “very much present” and mentioned that their family is adjusting to his evolving needs. “His disease often progresses slowly, and we’re moving alongside him. Yes, he knows who I am, even if it’s not in the same way as before. It’s still meaningful—just different.”

In March 2022, it became clear that Bruce would retire from acting following an aphasia diagnosis, later revealed to be FTD.

This form of dementia stems from damage in the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, leading to various symptoms like abnormal behavior and communication issues, according to the National Institute on Aging. It can have a profound impact on emotional health, daily functioning, and physical abilities.

Reflecting on their journey, Emma shared with Diane Sawyer during an ABC special titled “Emma and Bruce Willis: An Unexpected Journey.” She noted that determining the onset of his illness was challenging: “It’s all a bit hazy for me. I noticed things like Bruce not taking the girls to school as often, which felt off.”

Emma mentioned how she initially chose not to address it with Bruce directly and instead tried to adjust on her own. She observed noticeable changes in his demeanor, recalling, “He became quieter and more withdrawn. It was concerning to see such a contrast to his usual warm self.”

Emma described her struggle during the early stages of Bruce’s illness, feeling alienated in what had once been a close marriage. “It just didn’t feel the same anymore,” she admitted.

She recounted a moment where she gently asked Bruce if he was okay, to which he responded dismissively, leaving her feeling confused and unsettled.

When asked if she sees glimpses of the Bruce she used to know, Emma remarked: “Sometimes, yes. His laugh, for instance, or that sparkle in his eyes—it takes me by surprise. But then those moments slip away quickly, which makes it harder.” Despite the challenges, she expressed gratitude for his continued presence in her life.
