Emma Raducanu’s Struggles and the Weight of Expectations
After her early exit from the US Open, Emma Raducanu expressed feelings of being targeted by the sport. It might sound a bit dramatic at first glance, yet there could be some truth to her sentiments.
In the third round, she faced Elena Rybakina and suffered a swift defeat, losing 6-1, 6-2 in just 62 minutes—the fastest loss of her Grand Slam career. This follows earlier losses to Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, leaving Raducanu without a third-round appearance in the majors this year. To add to her struggles, she hasn’t won any matches against the top four players, which includes the mentioned trio and Coco Gauff.
Currently ranked No. 36 globally, Raducanu feels that the top players elevate their game when they compete against her. “I think they have something to prove—when they play me, they’re definitely at their best,” she stated, acknowledging the intense pressure she faces.
Her situation may also involve financial implications. With her striking looks and charismatic personality, Raducanu has garnered significant endorsements, often overshadowing her on-court accomplishments. In December, Sportico listed her as the seventh highest-paid female athlete across all sports. To put this in perspective, Sabalenka was fifth, with earnings that included $8 million from endorsements. Meanwhile, Raducanu, despite earning only $671,000 in prize money, has raked in an impressive $14 million from endorsements.
Interestingly, Raducanu hasn’t clearly articulated why she believes the top players are specifically targeting her in their matches.
Injury Concerns and Performances
This year’s US Open also saw Ben Shelton’s journey cut short due to injury, while Carlos Alcaraz had a different experience regarding health. He called for a medical timeout during his match against Luciano Dadeli to address knee discomfort.
Fortunately, the 2022 champion managed to minimize concerns about his health, describing the situation as precautionary. “I felt something in my knee after a serve—but after a few points, it just went away,” he explained. “I was worried at first but thankfully, it wasn’t anything serious.”
A Loss Felt by Many
In other news, Randy Moffitt, the younger brother of Billie Jean King, passed away at 76 in Long Beach, California. Moffitt had a notable Major League Baseball career as a pitcher for teams like the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays.
The USTA honored him with a heartfelt statement, expressing condolences to his family. “Randy, like Billie Jean, embodied confidence and a strong competitive spirit. It’s a tragic loss for our tennis community.”
