Emmy Rossum Reflects on Rushed Secret Marriage
Emmy Rossum, known for her role in “Shameless,” recently opened up about her hasty secret wedding, which she agreed to after her then-boyfriend allegedly issued an ultimatum. At just 21, she kept the marriage private and admitted she was already contemplating divorce before announcing it during an appearance on a podcast.
Rossum recounted how, after spending six months in Mexico filming “Dragon Ball Evolution,” her boyfriend, Justin Siegel, made an ultimatum that quickly escalated to marriage. She now believes her decision stemmed more from fear rather than genuine love.
Reflecting on that period, Rossum said, “I was in a very vulnerable state. I felt like I was trying to recover from some tough heartbreaks.” She noted how her fear of abandonment played a significant role in her choices, despite her younger self believing divorce wouldn’t be that complicated.
When the podcast host joked about whether she planned to get divorced, Rossum candidly responded, “One hundred percent.” Within days of the ultimatum, the couple tied the knot. Rather than a joyful celebration, she described the ceremony as unromantic, and she felt compelled to keep it under wraps due to her instincts telling her something was amiss.
Looking back, she realized, “I literally don’t hear the smoke alarm in my head saying, ‘Please stop, you don’t have to do this.’ I knew in my gut that it wasn’t right.” Rossum mentioned how during her time in Mexico, their relationship deteriorated further, as Siegel did not visit her.
By the time she returned home after filming, the incompatibility became “abundantly clear.” Eventually, she confided in her mother not to share good news but to ask for help. “I said to my mom, ‘I’m breaking up with Justin, and I need a lawyer,'” she shared, recalling her mother’s supportive nature during tough times.
The divorce was finalized in 2010, and Rossum later found love again with Sam Esmail, whom she married in 2017. The couple, who share two children, brought her a sense of healing. “My husband is so kind and thoughtful,” she said, appreciating the stability he provided, especially as a father.
Rossum began her career as a child and rose to fame with her part in “The Phantom of the Opera” and later gained acclaim for her portrayal of Fiona Gallagher in “Shameless” from 2011 to 2019.
