Assisted Living Worker Charged with Murder and Police Shooting

A 22-year-old worker at an assisted living facility has been charged with the murder of an 87-year-old billionaire philanthropist, Robert G. Fuller Jr. The incident, described as particularly shocking, allegedly involved the suspect, Emilio James Marquis, disguising himself in a long women’s wig. Additionally, he is accused of fatally shooting a Maryland state trooper while escaping following a traffic stop.

During a press briefing, the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Unit announced that Marquis, from White Marsh, Maryland, was apprehended in connection with Fuller’s murder at the Cogill Potomac Senior Living Facility, which occurred on Valentine’s Day.

Marquis had been working as a pharmacy technician at the facility since October. Surveillance footage captured him entering and exiting through a tampered door around the time Fuller was shot in the head in his apartment.

According to Police Chief Mark Yamada, there were no signs of theft from Fuller’s home. Investigators discovered that the door’s alarm had been disabled since January, and Marquis was the only individual seen using the door that day.

During the police investigation, folded paper towels used to prop the door open were found. Days after Fuller’s death, Marquis was seen at the facility post-shift, providing a suspicious explanation to staff. He triggered another door alarm and fled the scene when a supervisor arrived.

In a separate incident, a Maryland state trooper initiated a traffic stop on Tuesday after noticing that Marquis’s vehicle lacked a license plate. As officers approached, Marquis allegedly opened fire from the car, narrowly missing the officer and causing only minor injuries. “Our Maryland State Troopers certainly avoided a much more devastating outcome,” said Lt. Steve DeCelbo.

Marquis sped off, leaving behind shell casings that linked the shooting to Fuller’s murder.

Law enforcement, including Montgomery County Police and U.S. Marshals, apprehended Marquis in Rockville after a brief chase. He faces first-degree murder charges, which could lead to life in prison. Currently, he is being held without bail, with a court hearing to follow.

During searches in Baltimore County, authorities uncovered numerous wigs and masks that appeared to match the ones in the surveillance footage, making the suspect’s disguise a critical piece of evidence.

Initially, police had difficulty determining the suspect’s gender or ethnicity due to the disguise. Chief Yamada expressed uncertainty regarding the motive behind Fuller’s murder, noting that Marquis claimed they had a good relationship and he would never harm Fuller. “We’re probing deeper to uncover the communications and online activity of Marquis for a clearer picture of the circumstances,” Yamada added.

In the community, Fuller was well-regarded as a prominent lawyer and a former naval reserve officer. State Rep. Bill Brisio mentioned that Fuller had generously donated millions for community projects such as a new YMCA, hospital, and high school expansion. His tragic death leaves a significant void.
