Endangered Bornean orangutan born at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

An endangered baby Bornean orangutan has been welcomed into the world at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, Florida.

The baby orangutan was delivered by C-section on Saturday and weighed just over 3 pounds, park officials said. Her mother, Luna, is recovering from surgery and she plans to be reunited with her baby once her condition stabilizes.

These orangutans are found only on the island of Borneo and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which focuses on managing endangered populations and educating visitors about animals.

Bornean orangutans are the largest arboreal apes and the third largest overall. Busch Gardens said in a news release that the newborn’s birth is a “milestone in orangutan conservation.”

Orangutans in the wild typically live 35 to 40 years. The newborn monkey does not yet have a name. The theme park touts its zoo as one of the largest in North America, housing thousands of animals.
