Trump’s 200th Day in Office Marked by Foreign Policy Moves
President Donald Trump celebrated the 200th day of his presidency on Thursday, showcasing several significant foreign policy initiatives. These included peace negotiations, increased pressure on allies, and a fresh set of trade warnings.
One notable achievement was an agreement with Rwanda to accept the deportation of 250 individuals from the United States, part of Trump’s broader strategy to expand deportations from developing nations.
Trump seemed to suggest that smaller nations can align their policies and values more easily and that they should focus on their own issues to foster fairer relationships. It’s a bit complex, but the underlying goal appears to be about creating a more balanced engagement.
After finalizing the Rwandan deal, Trump directed his criticism towards India for purchasing Russian oil and selling it for profit. “India not only buys large quantities of Russian oil,” he remarked on Truth Social, “but also profits by selling it on the open market. They’re seemingly indifferent to the human toll of the conflict in Ukraine.” He added that he plans to raise tariffs on India.
A recent presidential order indicated that tariffs on Indian imports could increase significantly, from 25% to 50%, unless India halts its Russian oil purchases. Just before midnight, Trump announced that penalties would take effect immediately.
“These mutual tariffs will be enacted starting tonight!” Trump noted. He stated that money from countries that have long benefited from the U.S. would now flow back into America.
Then, Trump shifted his focus to Russia, indicating he had a “very productive meeting” with President Vladimir Putin aimed at reviving peace talks. “This war must end, and we will strive towards this goal in the following days and weeks,” he said, noting that he and European allies were unified in this mission.
Kremlin officials confirmed that they had been in contact with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff a day prior to the leaders’ planned summit, although the date and location remain unconfirmed.
Looking forward, Trump is set to reveal a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia during a White House event on Friday. He previously stated that his presidency would prioritize protecting persecuted Christians and playing a role in ceasing violence and ethnic cleansing in the region.
