Travis Head, who is deputising for the unwell Mitch Marsh, calls incorrectly and is invited to bat first by Phil Salt. He’s a brave man.

And so to Cardiff, where England need to win to keep the T20 series against Australia alive. Not that this little slice bilateral goodness is about winning and losing; it’s about… well, whatever you want it to be.

For many the most interesting aspect is the inclusion of young players on both sides: Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Xavier Bartlett and maybe Cooper Connolly.

It’s also another chance to watch the astonishing Travis Head, whose riotous 23-ball 59 settled Wednesday’s game inside the first six overs. And even if it is diluted, it’s still England v Australia. There are and will always be worse ways to spend a Friday night.

Main Events

1st over: Australia 15-0 (Short 14, Head 0) Reece Topley's first over was gone for 15. It was a good start for England. Short survived a big LBW appeal when an inswinging ball was pitched just outside leg, then was prodded by Topley after a wide ball down the leg side. Short hit a six down the ground, edged one over short third man for four and hit another boundary through mid-off. It could have been a lot worse for England. Topley finished the over with successive dot balls.

It's a beautiful, clear evening in Cardiff. Travis Head, captaining Australia for the first time, will (probably) thoroughly trounce England.

“I think it's a bit of fun at the end of the season./Shameless money-grubbing (delete where applicable), so I'll just accept it,” says Guy Hornsby. “But it seems very odd to stick with Jamie Overton as a batsman-only No. 7. He's really talented, but that hurt us in the first game because if the top three fail, he at least looks like a better shortstop. Give me a penny for any other No. 6/7 thoughts, who would I put in there? But then what do I know!

I think Overton will be great to get in there, it's a very specialised position and England really struggle to find players like that, so I think he's worth keeping an eye on.

England win the toss and bowl

Travis Head, pinch-hitting for an ill Mitch Marsh, misplays the umpire and is told by Phil Salt to bat at first. He's a brave man.

There was one ray of hope for England in the first T20 international. A great all-around performance from Liam Livingstone. Here's what he thought of it:

preamble

And on to Cardiff, where England need to win to stay in the T20 series against Australia. This bit of bilateral goodness isn't about winning or losing. It's… well, whatever you want it to be.

The most intriguing aspect for many is the addition of young players on both teams, such as Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethel, Xavier Bartlett and possibly Cooper Connolly.

It's also a chance to see the phenomenal Travis Head, who decided Wednesday's match inside the first six overs with a roaring 59 off 23 balls. And even if that momentum fades, it's still England v Australia. There are always worse ways to spend a Friday night.
