Another Costa del Goals outing for the Lionesses? Possibly a few less than against Austria and let’s hope for a bigger crowd, too, than the 950 who turned out in the bijou stadium with a good view of Morocco and the Rock of Gibraltar. And a rather loud PA system. Anyway, another chance for Sarina Wiegman to shuffle through her pack, full of talented players but with a few questions to answer. Dead balls were a problem and there’s still going to be that problem of holding on to possession when it comes to facing teams like Spain. It’s a rebuilding job, and this jaunt is work in progress. Italy should be tougher opposition than the Austrians so let’s see how this all plays out as the sun sets over southern Spain.

Sarina Wigman told ITV: “Keira has shown leadership both on and off the pitch and was replaced as captain this week. It’s great to have her wearing the armband today.”

“This is a competition and we’re preparing for April and looking at a lot of things. When you have all of these things as prepared as possible, you can make a decision and this is the team we have today. They impressed us. I think they improved their game. They are aggressive on the front foot, they press high, they are good on the ball, they play direct. What we’re trying to do is keep the ball and beat the press.”

About Grace Clinton and Lotte Ubben Mooi: “She just went out there and played free and quality.” [on her debut]. She’s been fighting for a lot of minutes since she came into camp, but she did a good job and we want to see that again. ”

“First of all, she has done very well, both at Arsenal and for us. We want to see a lot of players, so this is her chance to start.”

That England squad is a further modification of Sarina Wigman.: Grace Clinton, who scored her debut goal against Austria, joins Georgia Stanway and captain Keira Walsh. Lotte Uben Moi’s partner Alex Greenwood is much needed in defence, with veteran Lucy Bronze recently slotted in at right-back.

Chloe Kelly replaces Beth Mead on the right. Fran Kirby is absent after returning home with a knee injury.

preamble

Will it be another trip to the Costa del Golds for the Lionesses? Expect a crowd that will probably be a few fewer than the one against Austria, but larger than the 950 who gathered at the Bijou Stadium, which has stunning views of Morocco and the Rock of Gibraltar. And a pretty loud PA system. Either way, it’s another chance for Sarina Wiegman to mix things up in a pack full of talented players, but there are some questions to answer. Dead balls were an issue, but against a team like Spain, possession will still be an issue. This is a rebuilding effort and this journey is ongoing. Italy should be a tougher opponent than Austria, so let’s see how this situation plays out before the sun sets over southern Spain.

Kick-off is at 5pm UK time. Please join us.
