This was a fair decision by FIFA: Former USMNT player
Jonathan Bornstein, a former defender for the U.S. men’s national team, recently commented on FIFA’s contentious choice to lift Balogun’s red card suspension, allowing him to participate in an essential Round of 16 match in the World Cup. Bornstein defended this decision as “appropriate,” comparing it to the criticisms directed at the Norwegian national team coach. The U.S. team is set to face the top-ranked Belgium.
The FIFA World Cup semi-final clash between England and Argentina had fans buzzing, not just for the soccer but also for the historical context. However, it also resulted in an unfortunate conclusion for one of the tournament’s prominent referees.
Premier League referees Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor are now sidelined from officiating the semi-finals, following England’s advancement to the closing rounds of the 2026 World Cup.
It’s uncertain whether the Three Lions will reach the final, but the pair’s World Cup journey was curtailed due to circumstances beyond their control.
England triumphed over Mexico with a score of 3-2 in what has been dubbed an Instant World Cup Classic, marking the team’s first World Cup defeat at Estadio Azteca.
Both referees will also be barred from overseeing the semi-final match between Spain and France, as officials are typically prohibited from officiating games involving their home nations or influencing their progression in the tournament.
This suspension means Oliver may miss out on a significant financial reward; referees who stay through the tournament can earn over $100,000 in addition to bonuses for officiating in the final stages.
Oliver has been in charge of four matches during this World Cup, including the recent quarter-final between Spain and Belgium.
In the knockout stage, Argentina’s Messi managed to dodge a surprising upset against Cape Verde.
There’s also some escalating tension given the historical dispute between England and Argentina, which traces back to the Falklands War of the early 1980s. This forty-year-old issue tends to resurface each time the two countries face off on the soccer field.
The stage is set for another chapter in their storied rivalry, as both teams gear up for their encounter.
