Entire staff at Deadspin fired months after they smeared 9-year-old Chiefs fan as a racist

Just five months after Deadspin tried to smear a 9-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan as a racist, all of the sports media employees were fired as part of the acquisition.

Employees received an email announcing the sale, and some were informed at a meeting before their access to the company’s digital resources was cut off.

“We have recently been contacted by European company Lineup Publishing regarding their interest in acquiring Deadspin to add to their growing media holdings,” the email read in part. was written.

Other employees also posted about the decision on social media.

“So, we received a notice 30 minutes ago that Deadspin has been sold to a European startup and is not hiring any staff. Already the company’s free time and our laptops are locked out.” Posted Julie DiCaro of X, formerly known as Twitter.

Deadspin was criticized by many for trying to misrepresent a costume worn by a young Kansas City Chiefs fan as “blackface.” Critics immediately slammed the news organization for using a misleading photo that showed only one side of the child’s face and not the other side, which was painted red.

In February, the family of a boy named Holden Armenta filed a defamation lawsuit against Deadspin. Armenta’s family said they received a “barrage of hate, including death threats” because of the article.

“The Armentas were intentionally portrayed as anti-Black, anti-Indigenous bigots who proudly committed the worst acts of racism, motivated by their family’s hatred of Black and Indigenous people,” the lawsuit says.

The family also noted that the boy’s grandfather was an officer with the Chumash Tribe of Santa Ynez, California. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

The outlet changed the headline, added an editor’s note and replaced the photo in support of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The author also protected his own account on X after bizarrely accusing his detractors of being racist against Mexicans.

As a final insult, the email about the act also misspelled Deadspin.

“While the new owners intend to honor Deadpin’s unique voice, they intend to take a different content approach when it comes to the site’s general sports coverage,” they wrote.

Here’s the whole Deadspin debacle.
