FAA Reports Ground Stop Due to Equipment Failure

On Monday, Federal Aviation Administrator Brian Bedford announced that a cut to a backup fiber cable in New Jersey resulted in a ground stop affecting multiple airports in the Philadelphia, New York, and New Jersey areas after a circuit malfunction occurred.

The FAA confirmed that flights into Philadelphia International, Teterboro, and Newark Liberty International airports were paused due to problems with certain frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON. Following this, airports like John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Westchester County also experienced ground stops attributed to the same equipment issue.

Bedford explained that the primary circuit for Philadelphia TRACON had failed. Initially, when they switched to a backup, officials found that the fiber optic cable had been damaged. There’s hope that the TRACON could resume operations around 1:30 p.m. ET—if everything with the new circuit goes smoothly. Unfortunately, fixing the fiber optic cable is expected to take approximately 13 hours.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy remarked to reporters that the kind of issues being faced are not entirely unexpected. “We know these problems can happen and that cuts can occur,” he noted. He also mentioned that efforts have been ongoing to enhance FAA equipment and telecom systems.

Duffy pointed out that upgrading the system involves a considerable investment, but they are taking a comprehensive approach to address the situation. “When we receive the funding,” he added, “it’ll help us speed things up.” He characterized the equipment outage as not surprising at all.

While neither Bedford nor Duffy provided specific timelines for lifting the ground stops, the FAA website suggested the possibility of resuming at around 2:45 p.m. ET.
