This holiday season, a high-end grocery store in L.A. is introducing a unique take on a classic favorite: hot chocolate crafted from bone broth.
At Erewhon, known for its eclectic vibe, the new drink is the Spicy Bone Broth Hot Chocolate, which costs $11 but is complimentary for members who can enjoy a free beverage monthly.
The drink is developed in partnership with FOND Regenerative, a company that specializes in bone broth and promotes its health advantages for digestion.
So, what’s in it? This concoction blends FOND’s beef ginger soup, along with cayenne pepper, coconut milk, maple syrup, cacao powder, and cinnamon. And, amusingly, it’s referred to as “vomit” by some—though not everyone shares that sentiment.
In a light-hearted post, actress Ginger Gonzaga humorously dubbed herself an Erewhon influencer on Instagram. She shared her experience of picking up her monthly free drink, excitedly showing off the bone broth hot chocolate in an Erewhon cup.
“I know what you’re thinking: bone broth and cayenne pepper with chocolate? That sounds terrible,” she said, before declaring, “but you’re wrong.” She jokingly added, “It’s actually vomit. Bile in a cup, priced at $11. But hey, it’s free if you’re a member.”
In a follow-up comment, she clarified that she does actually enjoy Erewhon.
The Post tried the drink during a visit to the Beverly Hills location and noticed that they needed to make a fresh batch in the early afternoon.
Interestingly, the cashier at the drinks bar wasn’t a fan, warning that it was “disgusting” and noting that while many members get it for free, quite a few still choose regular hot chocolate instead.
As for the flavor, think of a mild chocolate cocoa blended with a touch of ginger and a hint of spice at the end.
This bone broth hot chocolate has started gaining traction on social media, with wellness enthusiasts both promoting it and experimenting with their own versions. Some people love it while others find the taste less appealing, which seems to be the nature of unique food trends.
Bone broth, it turns out, has a long-standing reputation throughout history as a remedy for various health issues.
If you’re curious to try it, keep in mind that the Erewhon special is only available until the end of December.
