Eric Adams presents a tough budget truth for misled supporters of Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani Faces Financial Reality After Promises of Free Services

Last week, Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani had some lofty promises that met a stark reality check.

According to a report from the Citizens Budget Committee, Mayor Eric Adams’ financial plan leaves only $8 billion for his successor. This figure doesn’t account for additional funds needed for any new initiatives.

Meanwhile, the federal government is anticipated to reduce aid to the city.

To address the budget gap exceeding $8 billion, Mamdani will need to uncover considerable savings from the existing budget.

Even if the legislature in Albany moves forward with the substantial tax hikes on personal income and businesses that Mamdani has suggested and allows all of the expected $9 billion from statewide taxation, it’s still doubtful that there will be adequate funds without cuts, much less for new programs.

It’s obvious that such tax increases would likely push many high-income individuals and businesses to leave New York, resulting in far less new revenue than projected.

So, where exactly will Mamdani find the funds to back his promises of free transportation, childcare, housing, and more?

Just the bus initiative alone is expected to cost close to $1 billion. When it comes to childcare, the figure could be around $6 billion, depending on how he frames his housing strategy, which could reach $10 billion.

Does Mamdani really expect these funds to magically appear?

Relying on the state for support isn’t a viable solution.

Yes, Governor Kathy Hochul mentioned that tax revenues could contribute to the free bus initiative.

However, the state is also likely looking at its own budget shortfalls, with federal support projected to drop to $8 billion yearly, mainly for food assistance and Medicaid.

I can’t say the city’s financial outlook seems promising: Adams may indeed be facing a $12 billion deficit through 2029, which could possibly worsen given that his budget might underestimate spending by around $4 billion, as noted by the CBC.

Perhaps Mamdani has a trick up his sleeve.

If not, those backing him could be in for a significant letdown.
