Adams Critiques Incoming Mayor Over Rent Freeze Proposal
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams has voiced his concerns regarding the rent freeze proposal put forth by his successor, Zoran Mamdani, suggesting that it might actually result in lower rental prices for working-class individuals in the city.
In a conversation with WABC 770 AM’s “Cats Roundtable” aired Sunday, Adams remarked on the clash between idealism and practicality in governance. “A lack of understanding that idealism collides with pragmatism when you have to govern a city and provide for working-class people. These are real problems,” he noted.
Adams expressed his disapproval of Mamdani’s plan to freeze rents on rent-controlled apartments, emphasizing the necessity for building owners to generate more revenue to cover escalating costs.
“Who pays for the increase in taxes? Who pays for the increase in repair costs? Who pays for the Con Ed increase in gas bills?” Adams questioned.
While Mamdani’s plan awaits the green light from the nine-member Rent Guidelines Committee, he remains optimistic about implementing the freeze. However, Adams is reportedly planning to replace six board members before Mamdani steps into his role, potentially hindering the new mayor’s efforts to appoint supporters of the freeze.
Opponents of the rent freeze have pointed out that it could inadvertently lead to an increase in rental prices for market units, as landlords might look to offset their rising costs.
“So you [need] We need to fully understand the scope of running this complex city,” Adams added during the interview.
Adams didn’t hold back on further criticisms, also targeting Mamdani’s stance on halting homeless encampment sweeps throughout the city.
“If you look at other cities, you see the consequences of people living on the streets, using drugs, having severe mental illness, and venting on the streets. That’s not what we want in our cities,” he stated, characterizing the city’s clean-up efforts as a “humanitarian” undertaking.
Mamdani is set to officially take office on New Year’s Day.
