Eric Gray made his mark in the Giants’ preseason opener

Three takeaways from the Giants’ 14-3 preseason win over the Lions:

1. Eric Gray needed a flashy play.

The second-year running back had a tough rookie season, leading the Giants to select Tyrone Tracy in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Gray had two big moments, catching the ball over his shoulder for a 24-yard gain and then taking a deft leap to catch the ball in the air with cornerback Morris Norris on a 48-yard touchdown run for the first of his two scoring runs.

2. Quarterback Tommy DeVito appears to have much better control of the offense than he did at this time a year ago.

That makes sense, right? DeVito rushed onto the field after Drew Lock was injured and proved he knows what he’s doing by running Brian Daboll’s system.

3. Linebacker Diontae Johnson has been a standout in training camp, and the freshman from Toledo sacked Nate Sudfeld on his first defensive series, showing off his excellent agility in the open field.

Later in the first quarter, he linked up with Jordan Riley to intercept a Craig Reynolds pass on third down and two yards for a zero gain.
