Red Bull New York Transitions to Youth Focus, Adjusts Choupo-Moting’s Role

Red Bull New York is shifting its focus towards younger talent, leading to a new position for one of its prominent players heading into 2025.

Eric Maxime Choupo-Moting, who was the leading scorer for the Red Bulls last season, was initially seen as pivotal for this year’s offensive strategy. However, Julian Hall’s impressive start to the season has altered that expectation significantly.

Except for one game this season, Choupo-Moting has been coming off the bench, a stark contrast to last year when he started 31 out of 33 regular season matches.

When approached about Choupo-Moting’s adjustment to this new role, head coach Michael Bradley praised him as “an absolute top professional in every way.”

“He’s a great teammate. Even with his experience, he lifts everyone up with his enthusiasm. The way he approaches practice is commendable,” Bradley noted. “And when things didn’t go his way, he remained committed.”

This season, Choupo-Moting has averaged just 24 minutes of play across the first four games and didn’t participate in the team’s recent 6-1 defeat to Charlotte FC.

He did manage to score his first goal of the season with a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer against Toronto FC earlier this month.

In the same match, Hall scored the sole goal for the Red Bulls, while Charlotte’s roster saw contributions from players like Idan Tokromati and Wilfried Zaha.

Bradley indicated that Choupo-Moting’s off-the-bench role isn’t permanent, stating, “Nothing is set in stone. We’re continually assessing how to best align our players with our current situation.”

Teammate Emil Forsberg emphasized the importance of confidence in challenging situations, urging players to believe in themselves and give their all in training sessions.

“Choupo is unique in every way. His work ethic, both as a player and person, is quite remarkable,” Forsberg added.

Choupo-Moting has also earned recognition for mentoring younger players at the club, particularly supporting 17-year-old Adli Mehmeti during practice. This mentorship aligns with Choupo-Moting’s expressed desire to guide the Red Bulls’ emerging stars.

Bradley remarked, “Choupo’s dedication, especially to younger offensive players like Hall and Tanner Rosborough, has been invaluable.”
