Rep. Eric Swalwell Indicted on Mortgage and Tax Evasion Charges
California Representative Eric Swalwell faced indictment on Wednesday, with allegations related to mortgage and tax evasion, as reported by NBC News.
Bill Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), stated in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi that Swalwell might have made false statements on loan documents concerning his purchase of a home in Washington, D.C. Furthermore, the FHFA’s acting inspector general is also looking into claims of mortgage fraud, according to an anonymous source cited by NBC.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has chosen not to comment on the situation, and the FHFA has yet to respond to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
In a statement, Swalwell expressed that, as a prominent critic of Donald Trump, it was somewhat unsurprising that such actions came against him. “As the only person who has continued to file lawsuits against Donald Trump for the past 10 years, the only thing that surprises me is that it took him this long to come after me,” he remarked. He also emphasized his determination not to live in fear, likening his situation to that of others who have faced similar scrutiny.
Swalwell further stated that he wouldn’t stop advocating for California residents and continued to criticize the president. “As Mark Twain said, ‘Patriotism always supports your country and supports your government when it deserves it,'” he added, urging the president to strive for improvement.
This news follows a recent pattern within Democratic circles, with California Senator Adam Schiff also establishing a legal defense fund amid a DOJ investigation concerning his finances related to alleged mortgage fraud. Just last month, Bondi appointed Ed Martin as a special prosecutor to investigate similar charges against Schiff and Letitia James, the Attorney General of New York.
Additionally, Pulte mentioned investigations into Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook, who filed a complaint regarding suspected mortgage fraud.
Swalwell has been in the spotlight lately as an outspoken critic of Trump, having labeled the president a “dictator” in the past.
