Swalwell Accuses Trump of Election Interference
Representative Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democratic candidate for governor of California, accused President Donald Trump of meddling in the presidential election. This accusation came after reports emerged that Trump was attempting to obtain documents related to Swalwell’s connections with Chinese spies.
Swalwell used various media platforms to voice his concerns, telling CNN that Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel are “dangerous people.” He emphasized, “Donald Trump and Kash Patel do not have the right to choose their next governor. Californians can.”
Patel is reportedly pursuing the release of documents concerning Christine Huang, known as Fan Fan, a suspected Chinese intelligence agent who had interactions with U.S. politicians.
Huang reportedly developed a close relationship with Swalwell while he served on the Dublin City Council. She was involved in fundraising for his 2014 re-election campaign and even recommended staff for his office. Reports suggest she had personal relations with multiple mayors.
Although Swalwell remained on a congressional committee despite his relationship with Huang, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy initiated a House Ethics Committee investigation once he took office in 2021.
In a recent podcast, Swalwell’s campaign asserted that he was cleared of any wrongdoing. “When there was even any suspicion of foul play, the FBI was quick to clear the air,” Swalwell stated.
His connections to Chinese spies have continued to influence his gubernatorial campaign. Recently, he clashed online with Barstool founder Dave Portnoy, who remarked, “Call me crazy. I don’t want politicians to fall for foreign spies.”
According to the reporting from the Washington Post, Swalwell seems to be attempting to turn the narrative around his spy connections into a political asset. In a video shared this past weekend, he acknowledged that his dealings with Huang were politically damaging. He added, “Donald Trump attacks me almost every week…it’s because he sees me as a threat.”
Swalwell also referenced President Trump’s criticisms, including a recent mention of Bill Pruitt, who faced federal charges for alleged mortgage and tax fraud linked to a $1.2 million home purchase in Washington, D.C.
“As always, I will be a warrior and protector of California,” Swalwell concluded, trying to resonate with voters who may be wary of Trump.
The California Post has reached out to the FBI for a statement.
