Swalwell Discusses Spy Controversy in Interview
Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, appeared noticeably affected during a recent radio interview with host Charlamagne. The discussion took a turn when Charlamagne inquired whether God had played a role in the impact of Swalwell’s “scandal.” In January 2023, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy removed Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee due to his connections with Christine Fang, whom authorities suspect of espionage. In a statement from May 2023, Swalwell expressed hope that the House Ethics Committee, which generally avoids issues of fraud, would help safeguard his reputation.
During the interview, Charlamagne asked, “Has the Chinese spy scandal hurt your credibility? Or did Republicans simply weaponize nothing against you?” Swalwell responded, saying, “The FBI and the House Ethics Committee labeled it as nonsense. I hope that holds some weight. But, in today’s misinformation landscape, I know this has become a favorite topic for some people on the right.” He added, quipping that his wife often reminds him, “What do you know? They’re not after you, you’re not that effective.” He views the attacks as “badges of honor,” some might say.
Swalwell also noted that some lawmakers theorize that Republicans perceive his political stance as a betrayal given his background. “A lot of Republicans seem to think, ‘Oh, he’s just another straight white Christian man, the son of a policeman—like so many others,’ so when I take a different approach, it feels like a betrayal to them,” he reflected. “That’s how I interpret their reactions.”
“I won’t back down. They can say whatever they want, and yes, threats may come, but if they think I’ll abandon my lawsuit regarding January 6th, or that I regret playing a key role, they’re mistaken. I’m not going anywhere. My upbringing wasn’t one of privilege; I had a dad who did what was right,” he asserted.
Fang, who volunteered for Swalwell’s 2014 campaign, has been linked to fundraising efforts for him and even placed an intern in his office. Swalwell maintains that he cut ties with her once he learned about her connections to the Chinese government.
Republicans often insinuate a personal relationship between Swalwell and Fang, but he has consistently declined to confirm or deny any personal involvement with her.
