Eric Swalwell misses votes to visit LA mansion during governor campaign

Representative Eric Swalwell is currently missing key votes in Congress while spending time at his brother’s luxurious $23.4 million mansion in Beverly Hills, which has come to light as he runs for governor of California.

His close connection with timeshare mogul Stephen Klubeck has raised eyebrows, especially considering Klubeck’s controversial past, including an affair with Swalwell’s ex-girlfriend. It’s been noted that Swalwell seemingly spent around 10 days at Klubeck’s expansive property since September, according to his social media activity.

During this period, the Congressman missed several House votes, using Klubeck’s home as a backdrop for videos he shared online.

This trend of prioritizing glitzy engagements over his congressional duties has been highlighted, with Swalwell having missed more votes than any other current member of Congress last year—even more than the late Rep. Raul Grijalva.

A look at Swalwell’s Instagram reveals familiarity with the interiors of Klubeck’s mansion, where he conducted media interviews as well. The property has garnered attention for its opulence, showcasing amenities like a tennis court alongside its six bedrooms and seven bathrooms.

Swalwell’s posts from the mansion reveal a consistent aesthetic, with identifiable features like a large square yellow painting and a distinctive stone wall. Klubeck himself confirmed Swalwell’s recent visits, remarking, “That’s my background. Mi casa, su casa.”

Political consultant Elizabeth Ashford pointed out that Swalwell’s social media presence could be detrimental to his gubernatorial aspirations, suggesting it implies he’s often absent from his official duties. She pointedly remarked on this narrative that raises questions about his whereabouts.

Interestingly, when locals in Swalwell’s claimed neighborhood were shown his photo, some, like resident Geeta Prusti, stated they had never seen him. Additionally, Swalwell’s expenditure on luxury accommodations near his district raises further inquiries about his residency.

While Swalwell’s campaign hasn’t commented on a request for clarity regarding his living situation, critics, including Republican candidate Steve Hilton, have voiced skepticism about Swalwell’s dedication both to his current role and California itself.

In a recent development, a judge in Sacramento provisionally dismissed a lawsuit challenging Swalwell’s claim of residency in California, although a public hearing is set for the near future.

An ongoing concern is whether it’s appropriate for Swalwell to accept gifts and stay for free at Klubeck’s mansion, particularly since Klubeck is not only a supporter but also a major donor to his campaign. Klubeck has made substantial contributions, including a $1 million donation, and has stated that the integration of their efforts supports Swalwell’s gubernatorial bid, though he later downplayed his comments.

Reports indicate Klubeck previously funded extravagant trips for Swalwell as well, including a $31,000 excursion to France. Known for his unpredictable behavior, Klubeck has faced accusations of erratic conduct tied to substance use, according to a lawsuit that has since been resolved.

In this political landscape, Swalwell’s failures to fulfill his responsibilities while visibly enjoying the trappings of wealth and support from influential donors blend into what some see as a serious concern for his credibility as a candidate.
