Swalwell Talks House Control and Comey Indictment
California Democrat Eric Swalwell recently spoke with Kate Bolduan, co-host of “CNN News Central,” about his intention to address the collaboration between House Democrats and the Trump administration in light of former FBI director James Comey’s indictment.
The Federal Jury has officially indicted Comey for allegedly lying and obstructing Congress during his testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020. Swalwell is optimistic that Democrats will regain control of the House in the upcoming midterm elections in 2026.
“We’re confident that we’ll be the majority a year from now,” Swalwell conveyed to Bolduan. “Our goal is to bring accountability and oversight. We plan to summon not just the Department of Justice, but also private entities that have engaged in deals with administrations, universities, entertainment companies, law firms, and beyond.”
He added, “I hope everything comes to light, and that people will think twice about making these types of deals. But remember, this all happened under Trump’s presidency. So, if anyone suggests there’s no political motive, they need to reconsider that.”
In another note, President Trump is in the midst of a $10 billion lawsuit related to an interview he attempted to set up with then-opponent Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential campaign. ABC settled this lawsuit for $15 million on March 19, 2024, following comments made by host George Stephanopoulos on March 10, 2024, which were characterized as defamatory by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace from South Carolina.
Additionally, several law firms are involved in contracts in relation to the Trump administration after claims emerged that some lawyers were engaged in activities that negatively impacted conservatives. In 2022, Kirkland and Ellis faced scrutiny for their treatment of former Attorney General Paul Clement, who, along with others, had been supportive of litigation regarding Second Amendment matters.
