Eric Swalwell's career hanging by a thread after chaotic 24 hours

Congressman Eric Swalwell Faces Career Crisis Amid Serious Allegations

Congressman Eric Swalwell’s political career appears to be rapidly deteriorating.

In just a day, the prominent Democratic gubernatorial candidate in California urged Swalwell to not only halt his campaign but also to resign from Congress. This comes as he battles allegations of sexual assault stemming from an incident involving a former employee, who claims he assaulted her while she was intoxicated at a charity event in April 2024.

In addition to this claim, three other women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct, including inappropriate messages and unwanted touching. They reported that they had documented their hospital visits and exchanged messages with friends and family regarding their experiences.

The staff member involved in the allegations stated that after a night of heavy drinking in 2019, she woke up naked next to him and felt as though they had engaged in sexual activity.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has initiated a criminal investigation into the alleged rape.

“I was saying no and pushing him away,” she recounted during an interview. “He didn’t stop.”

The prosecutor’s office has reached out, encouraging survivors or anyone with additional information to get in touch with the Special Victims Unit.

Officials emphasized that, “Specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are prepared to assist you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner.”

While Swalwell vehemently denied the allegations, he admitted to certain indiscretions in a social media message on Friday night and announced he would step back from the campaign to focus on family and friends.

Interestingly, sources later revealed that he was not spending this time at home but instead at a lavish $26 million mansion in Beverly Hills owned by his billionaire associate, Stephen Krubeck.

Reports confirmed that the video Swalwell recorded denying the allegations was filmed in Krubeck’s large residence, shared with an individual accused of dubious activities.

Swalwell expressed his desire to address the allegations personally, stating, “A lot has been said about me today through anonymous allegations, but I thought it was important to see and hear from me in person.”

He passionately asserted that “These sexual assault allegations are completely false.”

Former Congresswoman Katie Porter has called for Swalwell to suspend his campaign and resign. People’s reactions are mixed; she has faced her own scrutiny for past allegations of misconduct against an ex-husband.

Michael Trujillo, a political strategist, indicated he had heard rumors regarding Swalwell’s questionable staff relationships as far back as 2017, adding that he was skeptical about the rape claim.

Swalwell’s reluctance to withdraw from the race has led to a significant exodus among his campaign staff.

One campaign official lamented, “We are trying to help our staff find new jobs. These are caring people who are jeopardizing their careers.”

Officials from Swalwell’s campaign and congressional office expressed their horror at the allegations, describing the reported conduct as a serious violation of public trust.

Political analyst David Ratterman remarked that Swalwell’s situation resembles a “dead man walking.”

Numerous Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have called for an investigation and urged Swalwell to exit the race.

Ratterman noted, “If he faces criminal charges, campaigning might not even be his top concern at this point.”

Financial records reveal that Swalwell may have financial motivations for not resigning, as he reported at least $80,000 in credit card and student loan debt, along with a mortgage on a property valued between $1 million and $5 million in Washington, D.C.

His assets were not substantial, featuring just $15,000 in a Bank of America account and a modest pension.

Additionally, Swalwell has a stake in an AI company under scrutiny, valued between $250,000 and $500,000, which could pose challenges given the ongoing investigation.

He claims to be renting in Livermore to maintain residency in California and may face legal fees if matters escalate.

A visit to Swalwell’s home in Livermore revealed an empty lawn with a cottage cheese container, and neighbors reported not having seen him.

His past campaign initiatives have played a vital role in supporting his family financially, with reports revealing significant campaign spending on childcare while he and his wife, Brittany, raise three young children.

Sources suggest that Swalwell’s financial constraints might heavily influence his hesitance to step down from his political positions.

“He doesn’t have any backup,” one source shared. “I really believe that much of this situation revolves around his financial future.”
