Swalwell Drops Lawsuit Against Trump Administration

California Representative Eric Swalwell’s pursuit of a lawsuit against the Trump administration has come to an unexpected conclusion. On Friday, he withdrew his complaint.

Swalwell, who is also running for governor of California, had accused the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s leader of illegally accessing personal information as a form of retaliation for his anti-Trump stance.

In the lawsuit, Swalwell had positioned himself as a defender of free speech and a victim of constitutional rights violations. “There’s a reason why the First Amendment, the freedom of speech, trumps all other provisions,” he stated.

However, FHFA Secretary Bill Pulte claimed Swalwell himself had engaged in mortgage fraud, using data obtained from the agency.

After four months of legal battles, Swalwell decided to abandon the lawsuit. Both parties agreed to cover their own legal expenses to formally dismiss the case, according to submissions made on Friday.

Swalwell’s lawsuit claimed that Secretary Pulte had “scoured the personal records” of political opponents to silence dissent. Quoting George Orwell, he remarked, “If freedom means anything, it means the right to tell people what they don’t want to hear.”

The case was set to be overseen by Judge James Boasberg, known for his critical views of President Trump, which sparked accusations of political bias from Trump’s administration.

In what seemed like a final effort, Swalwell filed a motion to dismiss criminal charges against Pulte while seeking damages for alleged privacy law violations.

Despite holding a slight lead over other Democratic candidates in the gubernatorial race, Swalwell faces robust competition from Republican adversaries.
