Eric Trump said he wants “real accountability” for the security failures that led to a mass shooting at his father’s rally in Pennsylvania last Tuesday.
“The men and women who stood on that stage at that moment are the greatest people in the world,” the former president’s son said in an interview. “CBS Evening News” Norah O’Donnell, the Secret Service announcer who provided security for former President Trump after shots rang out at the rally.
“I know a lot of them personally and they’re really fine people. I’m confident they’ll get to the bottom of it, but there should be real accountability,” Trump’s son said. “A former president shouldn’t have a bullet in his ear.”
The former president was shot in one ear during an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, just days before the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Wisconsin. He wore a bandage over the ear when he entered the RNC grounds on Monday.
The Secret Service has come under intense scrutiny following the shooting, with some questioning how the gunman was able to get onto the rooftop in clear view of Trump. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said in an interview aired on Monday that the investigation into the shooting was her responsibility.
“The responsibility is mine,” she said. “I am the director of the Secret Service and I have to make sure that we conduct investigations and provide resources to our personnel as needed.”
In the interview with O’Donnell, Eric Trump said his father’s “ears hurt, but he was lucky because it was just a bad skin wound.”
“He’s in very good spirits,” the former president’s son added.
