“Malcolm in the Middle” Makes a Comeback
The beloved series “Malcolm in the Middle” is making its return, but one notable cast member has opted out of the opportunity for a significant payday. Eric Perr Sullivan, who portrayed Dewey, has declined a role in the upcoming Disney+ reboot, as shared by his former co-star, Jane Kaczmarek.
Now 34, Sullivan has chosen to prioritize his education. He recently earned a master’s degree in Victorian literature from Harvard University, opting to keep a low profile away from the entertainment scene.
Kaczmarek remarked, “He studies Dickens and is a great student. They offered him a lot of money to come back, but he simply said, ‘No, thank you.’”
This revival consists of four episodes and will feature Frankie Muniz returning as Malcolm, along with Bryan Cranston and Kaczmarek reprising their roles as Malcolm’s parents, Hal and Lois. Additionally, Chris Masterson and Justin Barfield will be back as Malcolm’s older brothers, Francis and Reese. The plot centers on a grown-up Malcolm navigating parenthood with his daughter.
In November 2025, Muniz shared that Sullivan is “very happy with the life he has built outside of the entertainment world.” He expressed respect for Sullivan’s choice not to return, noting that the cast wanted to support him without any pressure. “We had his blessing to recast this role from day one. I hope fans understand it was his decision,” he added.
Sullivan was part of the original series from 2000 to 2006 but stepped away from acting in 2010 and has largely remained out of the public eye. He was spotted in April 2025, making headlines as he was photographed for the first time in 18 years while leaving his home in Boston.
The show has cast Fargo actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark to take on the role of Dewey in the reboot.
Muniz recalled that discussions about a reboot started over a decade ago. “Bryan Cranston really drove the conversation forward. Initially, Brian and I were reaching out, gauging interest by saying, ‘Would you be interested if this happened?’” However, they were aware early on that Sullivan would not be joining them.
