Erika Kirk expresses her forgiveness for the person accused of killing her husband.

Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, expressed her forgiveness towards the individual accused of murdering her husband this past Sunday.

“On the cross, our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ I forgive him,” she stated.

Tyler Robinson, aged 22, faces charges for first-degree aggravated murder following the deadly shooting of Charlie Kirk on September 10th. Utah County Attorney General Jeff Gray announced in a press conference on Tuesday that the state intends to pursue the death penalty for Robinson.

In an interview with the New York Times, Erika Kirk made it clear that she prefers the legal system to decide Robinson’s fate rather than her personal wishes. “Many people asked me if I feel angry with him. Sure, but I told my lawyer I want the government to handle it. I don’t want that guy’s blood on my hands,” she explained.

During her remarks at a recent gathering, she reiterated this sentiment. The 36-year-old received an emotional standing ovation as she spoke, reflecting on love as the antidote to hate. “The answer to hatred is not hatred,” she emphasized. “The answer we know from the gospel is love, and it always is love.”

Erika also shared memories of her husband, describing her feelings of disbelief and profound grief upon seeing him in the hospital after the shooting. “I experienced shock and a depth of heartache I didn’t think was possible,” she recalled. Yet, she added, “I was able to see the man I love.”

She reflected on the insights gained from this tragedy, expressing gratitude for what she perceived as God’s mercy: “When I saw him, Charlie didn’t suffer.” Since the incident, Erika stated that she continues to feel God’s love surrounding her.

She recounted a moment with Second Lady Usha Vance, who visited her the day after her husband’s death. Vance assured her, “We’ll get through these 15 minutes,” offering much-needed support during a difficult time. “Those words were exactly what I needed to hear,” Erika noted.

In a recent decision, the board of Turning Point USA appointed Erika as the new CEO, following her husband’s founding of the conservative group in 2012. She is determined to carry on his mission. “The world needs Turning Point USA,” she said, emphasizing the importance of guiding young people away from negativity.

Erika and Charlie met in 2018, marrying in 2021, and they have two children, a son and a daughter. Their memorial service took place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals play. Reflecting on her loss, Erika said, “I miss him so much. Our marriage and family were beautiful, and they still are.”
