Erica Kirk Discusses the Significance of Sabbath with “The Five”
Erica Kirk, the CEO of Turning Point USA, shared her reflections on the importance of Sabbath time during an appearance on “The Five.” She emphasized how this practice deeply affected her family’s life and held special meaning for her late husband, Charlie Kirk.
During the discussion, she touched on themes from Charlie’s final book, “In God’s Name, Quit: Why Respecting the Sabbath Will Change Your Life,” which was released shortly before his tragic death on September 10th. “I witnessed a side of my husband that so many others never got to see,” Erica said. “It was a unique experience because it allowed him to relax, connect with God, and be fully present with our children.”
Erica recounted how Charlie felt passionately about conveying the importance of Sabbath to others. “He believed this message was crucial, and I have faith that it will touch millions,” she noted. Charlie often advocated for taking a break from the hectic pace of life. “Today is a day to go to God, read the Bible, and escape from the busyness, rush, anger, and noise of this world,” he mentioned back in June.
She characterized her late husband as a “bridge builder,” highlighting his belief that the Sabbath crosses political divides and appeals to all ages and backgrounds. The Kirk family honors the Sabbath by stepping away from technology and gathering together. “For Charlie, it was about resetting. Just realizing that the world can wait for 24 hours made a huge difference,” Erica shared.
Commenting on modern interactions, Erica expressed concern about technology detracting from meaningful conversation. She noted that Charlie valued family dinners to foster authentic communication, saying, “The quality of real dialogue is sorely lacking today.” The Kirk family tends to limit screen time, using it only for special occasions. She remarked, “We’re not big on screen time; we often joke about watching Charlie’s show followed by Bob Ross to help the kids nap.”
When Dana Perino, co-host of “The Five,” quoted Charlie’s words about Sabbath being a blessing, she sought Erica’s advice for those who feel pressed for time on the Sabbath. Erica’s response was clear: “Don’t make excuses, make adjustments. That’s definitely something Charlie stood by, and I fully support that.”
