Erica Kirk is set to confront Tyler Robinson, the alleged assassin, in a crucial court hearing this week regarding the murder of her husband, Charlie Kirk.
“This week is going to be challenging for everyone involved,” remarked someone familiar with the situation about the family and friends of Charlie who will attend the five-day evidentiary hearing in Provo, Utah.
“There will be evidence presented that may cause the family to leave the courtroom,” the source noted. “It’s completely up to them to decide.”
In accordance with Utah law, this preliminary hearing allows prosecutors to present their case and helps a judge establish whether there’s sufficient cause to proceed to trial, serving as an alternative to grand jury proceedings.
Graphic footage detailing the public murder is expected to be shown to Judge Tony Graff, accompanied by autopsy findings when the hearing begins on Monday. It’s not clear yet if images of Kirk’s body will be part of that evidence.
Both parties’ attorneys have agreed to notify Kirk’s family so they can choose to leave during potentially disturbing segments of the hearing.
Robinson, 23, stands accused of shooting Kirk, 31, at a distance on September 10 while he was addressing a large audience at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Prosecutors claim that Robinson confessed to the crime in messages exchanged with his transgender girlfriend, Lance Twiggs, which will be included in the evidentiary presentation.
This evidence likely encompasses transcripts from interviews conducted with Twiggs, who had previously been found with his family in Texas and was granted limited immunity for this discussion.
If convicted, Robinson could face the death penalty. He has yet to enter a plea regarding the charges against him.
