Rich Eisen Ends Play-By-Play Commentary for NFL Games

Rich Eisen has announced that he will step away from his role as a play-by-play commentator for NFL games, particularly following ESPN’s acquisition of the NFL Network.

“I believe it’s over,” Eisen shared with Sports Illustrated when questioned about his future in this capacity for the upcoming season.

Since around 2018, Eisen has been calling games for the NFL Network, covering various international broadcasts. He often worked alongside Kurt Warner, who provided color commentary.

ESPN has opted not to retain Eisen for the NFL coverage going forward. Sources indicate that Dave Pash is set to take over his responsibilities. Pash, leaving his position with the Arizona Cardinals, is widely regarded as one of ESPN’s top play-by-play announcers.

Eisen’s time calling games wasn’t without its challenges. He frequently faced criticism from fans and media alike, who felt he leaned too heavily on clichés and often went to the same phrases during broadcasts. Some critics noted his vocabulary and described his tendency to use the passive voice, referring to midfield as a “shield,” for instance.

In reflecting on his style, Eisen noted that working as a studio host shaped his instincts in a way that didn’t always translate well to play-by-play. “It was a lot of fun, but very different from what I’m used to,” he remarked. “When you’re in a studio and there’s silence, your instinct is to fill that void. But during a game, your job is often to step back after a big moment.”

Being successful in both roles isn’t common; Mike Tirico from NBC is one of the few who excels in both areas.

Despite this shift, Eisen’s role at ESPN seems secure. He already has a separate agreement with ESPN that includes hosting a daily radio show on ESPN Radio and Disney+, along with various special editions of SportsCenter.

Opinions on Eisen within the industry tend to diverge. He’s largely seen as a strong studio host and a familiar face for many sports fans. However, some find his nostalgia for the 1990s a bit out of touch, and he has faced backlash for his more political views. Notably, his radio show has featured a range of guests, including various political figures and journalists.

Ultimately, Eisen still holds significance in the sports media landscape, as acknowledged by ESPN ahead of its NFL Network debut.
