ESPN’s Hubie Brown, 91, retiring after calling one more game

Legendary basketball announcer Hubie Brown, 91, claims he will quit playing basketball at the end of this year.

The longtime coach first began broadcasting games after being fired by the Hawks in 1981.

“We're going to give Hubie one last shot in the game.” ESPN's Burke Magnus spoke on Jimmy Traina's SI Media podcast.

“He deserves it. We think the world of him. I think it's really amazing that he can still play the game at the age of 90.”

It's unclear when that final match will take place, but it looks like a memorable finals match is in the works for Brown.

“I'm not intentionally trying to be a mystery here, but we're going to salute Hubie for making a decision and sending off in style at some point during this year's regular season,” Magnus said.

“I don't think there's anyone who has been involved with professional basketball this long.”

Brown has had a tough year, with his wife Claire passing away in June and his son Brendan Brown passing away just two weeks ago at the age of 54.

Brendan previously served as an assistant coach with the Grizzlies and a commentator with the Knicks.

Brown has been with ESPN since 2004 and coached multiple teams during his long career in basketball.

He graduated from Niagara University in 1955 and immediately began coaching high school hoops throughout the New York and New Jersey area.

After Red Holtzman left in 1982, Brown became the Knicks' head coach, a position Brown held until 1987.
