Monica McNutt of ESPN believes Caitlin Clark is popular as it appeals to white people in the Midwest.
McNutt was talking to the BBC when asked about Clark's popularity. She seemed to rely on competition to answer questions from British reporters.
“Katelyn expressed it, and again, to me some of this is probably not fair to her, because it wasn't what she was based on or really based on her personality. She was a white girl in the middle of America.
This was a modest thing, especially from the WNBA and many of its players. People who support the league have consistently pushed forward with the claim that Clark fans are racist.
Clark's top WNBA rival, Chicago Sky's Angel Reese, often accusing Clark fans of being racist. For example, last September, she accused Clark fans of “accuse them of being extremely rude, and I think there's a lot of racism about it.”
Lease is hardly alone. Suns star Alyssa Thomas also opposed Clark's “racist” fans, claiming that Indiana Fever fans committed racist behavior against her.
Others outside the league, such as former ESPN talker Jemele Hill, have argued that racists support Clark. Fox Sports 1 commentator Skip Bayless makes a similar claim.
To avoid losing, the league itself has accused fans of being “racist.”
