'Essentially held him responsible for his own assassination'

On Monday, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution criticizing Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and seeking to remove several members of the “squad” from their committee positions. This came in response to comments made by conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who had mentioned “laughing about assassinations.”

Mace stated, “Ilhan Omar has made it clear who she really is. She defends acts of political violence and has yet to denounce even the brutal assassination of Charlie Kirk when it goes against her agenda.” She added that laughing at such violent acts warrants accountability.

Just a day after Kirk’s assassination, Omar expressed concern over the outpouring of praise that followed his death. She remarked in an interview with a progressive outlet, “There’s so much chatter about him, but it’s as if people are ignoring the harm his words have caused.” Minnesota Democrats also accused Kirk of spreading “hate rhetoric” online.

Omar later shared a video on social media that criticized not just Democrats but celebrities as well for “normalizing Kirk’s behavior,” claiming that conservative influencers engage in harmful rhetoric.

Mace’s office indicated that Omar’s statements, along with a social media post that seemed to downplay Kirk’s murder, showed a lack of respect for his grieving family.

This resolution aims for a vote in the full House regarding Omar’s censure, which could lead to her removal from both the House Budget Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee.

In a recent press conference, Omar commented on the impending government shutdown, demonstrating that her challenges in Congress are ongoing.

If Mace’s resolution is successful, Omar will join a difficult list, becoming the 29th lawmaker in U.S. history to face censure.

Omar’s office has yet to respond to inquiries about these developments.
