Establishment-backed Janelle Bynum defeats progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner in Oregon House primary

Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum will win the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District, according to projections from Decision Desk Headquarters, leading to the progressive race to oust incumbent Republican Rep. Lori Chavez Delemer. defeated the rival.

Bynum defeated last year’s Democratic candidate, Jamie McLeod Skinner, as the party seeks to regain the seat lost to Chavez Delemer in the midterm elections.

This constituency is attracting attention as one of the key seats to gain control of the Legislature in the fall, as Republicans struggle to maintain their majority. Bynum’s victory is important for the party’s establishment, which has largely rallied around McLeod Skinner since he defeated centrist former Rep. Kurt Schroeder (D) in the previous primary. Although it would be considered a victory, he lost to Chavez Delemer in November of the same year. .

Bynum garnered major endorsements during the primary from Democrats in the House of Representatives, including from Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek (D), the campaign arm of the House of Representatives, and Emily’s List, a group that supported McLeod Skinner in the midterm elections. April survey Campaign expenses paid by her campaign showed Bynum with a slight lead.

Republicans hope Bynum, who defeated Chavez-Dellemer in two previous state races, can return the seat to Democratic control this fall. Mr. Bynum, the Republican incumbent, was unbeatable in the Republican primary.

The Republican incumbent was unopposed in the Republican primary.
