Esteban Ocon states, ‘I have earned my place’ in F1

The 2027 Formula 1 Grid is Almost Complete

It seems that the grid for 2027 is nearly finalized.

However, Esteban Ocon might find himself without a full-time seat next season. The seasoned driver recently announced that he will not be returning to Haas, which leaves him as a free agent for 2027. With over nine seasons of experience in Formula 1, Ocon boasts four podium finishes and one victory to his name.

Yet, despite this track record, he may miss out on a permanent spot for the upcoming season.

Ocon is confident that he merits a position in F1, and in a media session before the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, he expressed his aspiration to remain in the sport through 2027.

“Yeah, still working on it, still discussing,” Ocon mentioned during a press conference. “When I have more news, I’ll definitely announce it. For now, my main focus is on this weekend and maintaining the momentum we’ve built in recent events. I think I’ve completed over 100 overtakes this year, which is pretty good. Starting from pole position means fewer overtakes, but that’s not really our speed at the moment. Let’s keep pushing and fighting.”

In response to a question from Sky Sports F1’s David Croft, Ocon reaffirmed his belief that he belongs on the grid, pointing to his racing background.

“Formula 1. That’s where I deserve to be,” Ocon stated. “Looking at my results and what I’ve showcased in F1, it makes sense for me to be here. Sure, there are other exciting categories, but my goal is to compete in Formula 1 over the next five to seven years. I’m committed to making that happen. Right now, that’s my only focus.”

Nevertheless, Ocon admitted that he might have to consider a reserve role, similar to the one he held with Mercedes during the 2019 season.

“Yes, if racing options next year don’t pan out, then that could be the way forward,” he replied when questioned about this possibility by Croft.

A potential return to Mercedes could be a viable path for him in 2027, especially since Toto Wolff still oversees Ocon’s career. Not only did he have a stint as a reserve driver at Mercedes several years back, but Valtteri Bottas also returned as a reserve in 2025, eventually securing a full-time seat with Cadillac this season.

Could Ocon find himself on a similar trajectory?

Considering his options are narrowing, a return to Mercedes may be on the horizon for him.
