Von der Leyen to stay on in job after EU election boost

Ursula von der Leyen Guterres is expected to remain for a second term as European Commission president as EU leaders meet tonight to discuss for the first time the distribution of key European posts.
The EU’s 27 heads of state and government said last week’s European Parliament elections had boosted nationalist and far-right parties. Emmanuel Macron Early elections will be held in France.
The question is whether von der Leyen will be appointed to a second five-year term as president of the commission, which writes and enforces EU law. Charles Michelthe President of the European Council, and Josep Borrellthe EU’s top diplomat.
Ms von der Leyen has long been the clear frontrunner, a position strengthened by Europe-wide votes as the lead candidate for the centre-right European People’s Party, which will be the largest party in the new European Parliament with 26% of seats.
Consensus also solidifying against Portugal’s former Socialist prime minister Antonio Costa He will succeed Michel as President of the Council of the EU.
Estonian Prime Minister, Kaya Karasuis seen as the leading candidate to succeed Borrell as the EU’s top diplomat.

Poland wants a Europe that is decisive and strong on issues of security, migration, rule of law and defence, the Polish prime minister said. Donald TuskHe made the statement on social media ahead of the summit.

Von der Leyen to stay on in job after EU election boost

Ursula von der Leyen Guterres is expected to remain for a second term as European Commission president as EU leaders meet tonight to discuss for the first time the distribution of key European posts.
The EU’s 27 heads of state and government said last week’s European Parliament elections had boosted nationalist and far-right parties. Emmanuel Macron Early elections will be held in France.
The question is whether von der Leyen will be appointed to a second five-year term as president of the commission, which writes and enforces EU law. Charles Michelthe President of the European Council, and Josep Borrellthe EU’s top diplomat.
Ms von der Leyen has long been the clear frontrunner, a position strengthened by Europe-wide votes as the lead candidate for the centre-right European People’s Party, which will be the largest party in the new European Parliament with 26% of seats.
Consensus also solidifying against Portugal’s former Socialist prime minister Antonio Costa He will succeed Michel as President of the Council of the EU.
Estonian Prime Minister, Kaya Karasuis seen as the leading candidate to succeed Borrell as the EU’s top diplomat.
