Eugenie Bouchard Bids Farewell to Tennis
Emotions ran high on Wednesday night as Eugenie Bouchard, the Canadian tennis star, prepared to say goodbye to her sport after a hard-fought match at the National Bank Open in Montreal.
The 31-year-old Bouchard addressed the audience following her defeat to 17-seed Belinda Vensik, ending her professional tennis career with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
She had originally intended to conclude her career in her hometown early in July. It was clear she found it difficult to keep her composure while speaking to the gathered crowd.
“Tennis has given me so much,” she said, taking a moment to collect herself. “I’m really thankful for this sport and everyone who inspired me throughout my journey.” Her voice quivered slightly as she continued, “I owe a lot to my mom, dad, sisters, and brothers for their sacrifices. When you all cheer for me, you cheer for them too. I wouldn’t be here without your support.”
She also extended her gratitude to her coaches, trainers, and everyone involved in her career, noting, “You know who you are. Thanks to you, I was able to live my dreams!”
Bouchard had a truly remarkable career, being the first Canadian woman to reach a Grand Slam Singles final and breaking into the WTA top five rankings.
In 2014, she reached the semi-finals at both the Australian and French Open, ultimately competing in the Wimbledon finals that same year, where she lost to Petra Kvitová.
“Through her incredible achievements and connection with fans, Bouchard has inspired a generation of young Canadians while contributing to the global popularity of tennis,” a WTA representative stated. They wished her well as she moves on to new challenges.
Before her last match, actor Jim Parsons, known for his role in the CBS sitcom “Big Bang Theory,” paid tribute to Bouchard. He reflected on how he and his husband had the opportunity to watch her play during her memorable 2014 Wimbledon run after being introduced by their managers.
After arranging their schedules, they traveled to London to watch Bouchard compete all the way to the finals.
“I’ll be cheering for her from here on,” Parsons mentioned, expressing his appreciation for her journey. “Whatever the outcome, I’m just thankful for the experiences we shared.”
“Congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished. It’s been an unforgettable ride.”
