Switzerland are serious opposition for England. They should have beaten the hosts Germany (although in hindsight Niclas Fullkrug’s injury-time equaliser was a blessing) and they hammered the holders Italy.

Important Events

Jude Bellingham’s strange behaviour at Euro 2024 There are echoes of Wayne Rooney in 2006 – a tournament that ended with him being sent off for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho’s baby maker – but Gareth Southgate doesn’t seem too worried about Bellingham.

I care a lot about everything he’s accomplished. Nobody is perfect at that age, or any age. Sometimes you react emotionally, but I don’t think you can be the type of player that he is without those emotions. I think he handles it all really well.

Switzerland reborn in Shaka’s image

Switzerland will be a tough opponent for England, having been the should-have team against hosts Germany (though in hindsight Niklas Fluklug’s stoppage-time equaliser was a blessing) and then thrashing former champions Italy.

The last time England and Switzerland met The last time they achieved such a great result in a major tournament was in the group stage of Euro 2004, when Wayne Rooney scored two goals (one of which may have been an own goal) in a 3-0 victory.
